Salt and water

We are working with solutions and mixtures. Today we talked about the difference between a solution and a mixture. We added sugar in hot and cold water and drew atoms and ions.
Then the class had to find out if you can resolve how much salt as possible in a glass of water.

Lucas and Samuel mixed with salt until they get a saturated solution.

We then used the salt solution to paint on black paper and came up with fine artwork.

Chemical symbols

We looked at the new chemical symbols in Europe from 2010. We compared with the old symbols and talked about each symbol. Then the students made those symbol. They were super nice!

Geometric ABC

We have made an abc of geometry, a large painting (70 cm * 100 cm) with small squares. Each square demonstrates a word that has to do with geometry, like Hypotenuse or Rectangle. It is of course in Swedish but I would like to show this great idea of mine. Enjoy!

We can take a closer look at some of the squares.

Pentominoes

Each pupil was asked to make laminated Pentominoes made from small squares with the side of 2 cm. The class was then supposed to build a larger square or rectangle with the small parts. No one managed to resolve it fully that lesson but they were engaged and amused. A week later they´d solved it!

You almost did it, Linn!

Tesselation

After a tip from Margareta Forsbäck I did some tesselations and nice patterns with grade 5. The pupils got to practice fine motor skills, fractions, geometry, listening to instructions and to see patterns. Then we decorated the classroom with this beautiful tesselation.

The scale with Bratz and Barbie dolls

How could a Bratz doll or Barbie look like life-size? We found out.

How about it? Is it reasonable?

On the students' own initiative, we also thougt about how a doll really should look like and drew pictures of ourselves in the scale. It looked like this:
